Kai's Green Thumb
Kai knew that he’d woken up far too early from the moment he’d opened his eyes. He couldn’t help but be eager, knowing that he was going on a date with Azure later in the day. He’d hardly slept the night before and yes, his lack of sleep showed on his face. Still, his excitement meant that he’d find no more slumber.
It was a beautiful day in Booterra and with hours more to go before he’d see Azure, Kai made himself a cup of coffee and put it in a travel mug before heading out into the day for a walk. There were a few other Boos awake, going about their early morning business and they all looked decidedly more rested than he did. Alas.
Kai didn’t have any particular destination in mind as he walked, only being sure to avoid Azure’s home as it wasn’t even close to the time for them to meet. In his wanderings, Kai found himself in front of a particularly full looking greenhouse and could hear the sounds of frustrated muttering from inside. The door to the greenhouse wasn’t fully latched and with curiosity, he pushed it open and peeked inside.
Winston was in there, hand to his chin as he muttered about something or other. Kai recognized him as one of the primary berry sellers in the area, though he hadn’t gotten to know the other Boo very well. The greenhouse seemed to be brimming to the point of overflowing and it was hard to deny that the avid gardener looked more than a little overwhelmed. After another sip of his coffee, Kai cleared his throat to announce his presence.
“Beautiful morning, isn’t it?” He said with a wry grin. Winston jolted from the greeting but greeted the other Boo with a warm smile.
“It is! Or… it would be if I could get all of this under control.”
“Oh?” Kai stepped inside and looked around. “Looks like a productive harvest.”
“You can say that again.” Winston murmured, rubbing a little at his temple. “I put my nephew in charge of planting and let’s just say… He’s a great little fellow but he can get a bit over zealous.”
Kai looked around at what seemed to be a see of various abundant berries and raised his pierced eyebrow. “A bit?” Winston chuckled.
“There are worse problems to have I suppose. Just a lot to handle I suppose.”
“Did you want a little help?”
“If you’re offering, I certainly wouldn’t say no.” Winston smiled gratefully at his newfound helper. It took a bit of time to explain what he needed done, but Kai listened attentively, following along with the avid gardener’s instructions. There was a little bit of trial and error at first, but thankfully, Winston was incredibly patient with his new impromptu apprentice. Soon enough, Kai was trimming away what wasn’t needed and helping to harvest and sort the berries to the gardener’s specifications. It was quite the job and with so much to do, the time passed quickly. Even though Kai helped for quite awhile, they were nowhere near finished by the time he had to leave to get ready for his date.
“Are you sure you have this all handled?” Kai asked uncertainly.
“Yes. Thank you so much for the help. Every little bit helps!” With a warm goodbye, Kai headed out with a little pouch that contained a few berries Winston had gifted as thanks. Perhaps he’d share them with Azure later. The other Bunnaboo was sure to enjoy them, and there was nothing better than sharing with those you care most about.
Kai woke up a little to early for his date with Azure, but what better to pass the time than helping out with a little gardening?
